How Long Is Medical Assistant School?
How long is medical assistant school? Most programs take about 9 to 10 months: the median stated length across 867 programs is 40 weeks, with a median 180-hour externship near the end. Certificates and diplomas run a median of 39 to 40 weeks, associate degrees 78 weeks, and 163 programs finish in 32 weeks or less. Compare them on the accelerated programs page.

How Long Is Medical Assistant School for Most Students?
Plan on about 9 to 10 months. Across the 867 verified programs that state a length, the median is 40 weeks. That figure covers classes, skills labs and the externship, which is the supervised clinic placement that closes almost every program. The median externship is 180 hours, and 936 programs list one.
Length depends mostly on the credential you choose:
- Certificates (614 programs) have a median of 39 weeks and 800 clock hours.
- Diplomas (390 programs) have a median of 40 weeks and 800 clock hours.
- Associate degrees (309 programs) have a median of 78 weeks and 1,215 clock hours, because they add general education courses.
- Non-credit workforce programs (27 programs) have a median of 26 weeks and 560 clock hours.
The BLS describes the usual route as a postsecondary certificate or associate degree lasting about 1 or 2 years. The verified program data puts most certificates and diplomas at the short end of that range.
Medical Assistant Program Length by Credential
| Credential | Programs | Median length | Median clock hours | Median credits | Median externship |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Certificate | 614 | 39 weeks | 800 | 36 | 180 hours |
| Diploma | 390 | 40 weeks | 800 | 43 | 180 hours |
| Associate degree | 309 | 78 weeks | 1,215 | 63 | 160 hours |
| Non-credit | 27 | 26 weeks | 560 | 18 | 160 hours |
Two programs with the same calendar length can hold very different amounts of training. Clock hours tell you more. Lake Technical College in Florida fits 900 clock hours, including a 190-hour practicum, into about 30 weeks. Ross Medical Education Center’s diploma, offered at campuses such as Ross Medical Education Center-Huntsville, fits 720 clock hours into 30 weeks by day.
The certificate programs and associate degree programs pages list every program in each group, with hours and cost.
The Fastest Medical Assistant Programs
No verified program runs 4 or 6 weeks. The shortest stated lengths start at 8 to 10 weeks, and the shortest programs also carry the fewest hours.
| Program | State | Length | Hours | Externship | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Contra Costa Medical Career College, Clinical Medical Assisting | CA | 10 weeks | 320 clock hours | 160 hours | $6,942 published total |
| Charles A Jones Career and Education Center, Clinical Medical Assistant | CA | 8 to 10 weeks | 160 total hours | 40 hours | $2,995 published total |
| Manchester Community College, WDC Medical Assistant | NH | 12 weeks | 480 hours | 160 hours | $5,800 published total |
| Advantage Career Institute, MA with Phlebotomy, EKG and PCT | NJ | 14 weeks by day, plus internship | 180 hours | ||
| The Christ College of Nursing and Health Sciences, MA Clinical Certificate | OH | 15 weeks | 16 credits | $5,040 published total | |
| Holyoke Community College, Jump Start Medical Assistant | MA | 16 weeks | 140 classroom hours | 160 hours |
Blank cells mean the school states no figure for that field.
Holyoke’s Jump Start program has no cost to participants. The school describes it as one of its grant-funded job training programs. It runs Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, for 12 weeks in class and 4 weeks of externship.
Short programs fit someone who needs to start work quickly and already knows they want a clinical role. The catch is hours. The AMT education route for the RMA asks for 720 hours of instruction, including at least 160 hours of externship. A 160-hour or 320-hour program doesn’t reach that. The CCMA from NHA asks only that you completed a medical assistant training or education program within the last 5 years, which is why short programs such as Contra Costa’s and Manchester’s prepare students for the CCMA.
Of the 163 programs that finish in 32 weeks or less, the median is 30 weeks and 720 clock hours. Browse them all on the accelerated medical assistant programs page.
Fast Programs That Still Lead to the CMA
Only graduates of CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited programs can sit the CMA (AAMA) exam by the standard route. Among the 163 accelerated programs, 22 hold that accreditation. A few of the fastest:
- Grand Rapids Community College in Michigan: 22 weeks and 772 clock hours, CAAHEP-accredited, with a practicum of about 4 to 5 weeks. Published cost $8,744. The school reports that 100% of program graduates passed the RMA exam in 2024.
- Manatee Technical College in Florida: about 6 months and 900 clock hours, CAAHEP-accredited, hybrid, with a 200-hour practicum. Estimated total program cost $6,791, and cumulative job placement of 92.73% for 2020 to 2024.
- Loma Linda University in California: 6 to 7 months, CAAHEP-accredited, with at least 160 hours of clinical experience. Program cost $7,800.
- Anoka Technical College in Minnesota: two semesters plus a 280-hour externship, CAAHEP-accredited, with five-year averages of 93.98% exam passage and 91.40% job placement.
Accredited students also save time at the end. The AAMA lets students in an accredited program register for the CMA exam once all classroom coursework is done, before the externship finishes. Check any program’s status with the accredited program checker.

Lengths from each school's own pages, October 2026, converted to weeks (months x 4.33, semesters x 16, quarters x 11). 163 programs take 32 weeks or less. Most lengths include the externship; part-time and evening schedules run longer.
How Your Schedule Changes the Timeline
Evening and weekend tracks exist at 298 and 25 programs. They let you keep a day job, but they stretch the calendar.
| Program | Day schedule | Evening or weekend schedule |
|---|---|---|
| Ross Medical Education Center-Huntsville | 30 weeks | 36 weeks (afternoon and evening) |
| New York Medical Career Training Center, Medical Assistant (RMA) | 25 weeks | 30 weeks |
| Alaska Career College | 9.5 months | 14 months |
| Florida State College at Jacksonville | 8 months | 12 months |
| Westchester School for Medical & Dental Assistants | 30 weeks | 57 weeks |
Plan for the externship separately. Even on an evening track, it usually runs on clinic hours. Florida State College at Jacksonville’s 190-hour externship is Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm, for 5 weeks. Herzing University’s externship runs over eight weeks on weekday daytime hours. If you work days, ask your employer about those weeks before you enroll.
Online and hybrid formats can shorten your commute but rarely the program. Of 508 programs with online coursework, only 13 are fully online. The rest still require in-person labs or an in-person externship. The online medical assistant programs page shows what each one requires on site.
Why Associate Degrees Take Up to Two Years
An associate degree adds general education, such as English, math and psychology, to the medical assisting core. That is why the median runs 78 weeks. The longest stated programs include Idaho State University at 2.5 years and Trocaire College in Buffalo at 24 months.
The extra time can pay off later. The credits transfer more easily toward nursing, health administration or a bachelor’s degree. A degree suits someone who wants a credential to build on, or who has time and aid to cover four or five semesters. If you need a paycheck within a year, a certificate or diploma gets you there and can often be stacked into a degree afterward.
Some schools sell the degree in two parts:
- Ross College-Sylvania’s online AAS takes 70 or 91 weeks from the start, or 40 weeks on its accelerated track, or 55 weeks for students who transfer in a completed MA diploma.
- Miller-Motte College-Chattanooga’s online degree completion takes as little as 4 to 6 months, for its own Medical Clinical Assistant graduates.
Short Listings That Aren’t Full Programs
Some programs look fast because they are only part of the training. Treat these as bridge or completion programs, not full medical assistant training:
- Charter College’s Medical Assistant A.A.S. lists 7 months, but it is a degree completion for Charter certificate graduates who already hold a national certification.
- Ivy Tech Community College’s CCMA Development Prep Certificate is 6 credits over one semester. Ivy Tech’s full program is the technical certificate or the associate degree.
- Cuesta College’s one-term certificate of specialization is 12.5 units. The full program is the Certificate of Achievement or the associate degree.
- Highline College’s 19-credit pathway is a bridge for registered medical assistants in Washington.
One verified program is not admitting now: Technical College of the Rockies in Colorado has closed its two-semester program to applications and keeps an interest list.
How Many Hours Each Certification Route Requires
Program length matters most when it meets the exam you want. Each certifying body sets its own floor.
| Certification | Route through a program | Hour requirement |
|---|---|---|
| CMA (AAMA) | Graduate of a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited program | Set by the accredited program |
| CMA (AAMA) Alternative Pathway | Graduate of a qualifying postsecondary MA program | 560 academic contact hours plus a 160-hour externship |
| RMA (AMT) | Education Route, graduated within the past 4 years | 720 hours of instruction, including 160 hours of externship |
| CCMA (NHA) | Completed an MA training program within the last 5 years | No hour minimum on the NHA page |
A program around the 720-hour mark, such as Ross Medical Education Center’s 30-week diploma or the 800-hour median certificate, clears the RMA floor. The certification pathway tool matches your program to the exams it qualifies you for, and the CMA certification and CCMA certification guides cover each exam.
How to Choose a Program Length That Fits
- Count hours, not weeks. A 10-week, 320-hour program and a 30-week, 900-hour program both say “fast.” Only one clears the RMA’s 720-hour floor.
- Decide on the CMA first. If you want it by the standard route, filter to the 339 accredited programs before comparing length. Only 22 of them finish in 32 weeks or less.
- Plan the externship weeks. The median is 180 hours, usually full time on weekday clinic hours.
- Price your schedule. The same program can run 30 weeks by day and 57 weeks on evenings and weekends, as Westchester’s does.
- Check what the program actually is. Bridge, completion and prep certificates look short because they assume earlier training.
The program matcher filters by length, schedule and accreditation in your state. To see what each option costs, read how much medical assistant school costs.
