MA Certification Pathway Finder

Which Medical Assistant Certification Exam Can You Take?

It depends on your training, your work history and whether you served. A CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited program opens the CMA (AAMA) standard routes. The RMA (AMT) and CCMA (NHA) also accept other training programs and work experience, the NCMA (NCCT) takes students and graduates of NCCT-authorized schools, work experience or military training, and the CMA (AAMA) has an Alternative Pathway for other qualifying programs once the AAMA approves them. Answer the questions below to see which routes fit you.

How the Certification Pathway Finder Decides

The finder reads each body's eligibility page and turns every route into the conditions it states: the kind of program, how long ago you finished, program and externship hours, a high school diploma or GED, years of work in a set window, and military training. Your answers are checked against each route. An exam shows apply now when a route fits, once you finish when a school route opens at graduation or at the end of classroom work, and possible when a route also needs the body to approve your program, such as the AAMA's Alternative Pathway or AMT's competency route.

Hours matter more than most applicants expect. AMT's education route asks for 720 hours of instruction with at least 160 hours of externship, and the AAMA's Alternative Pathway asks for 560 academic contact hours plus a 160-hour externship. The program matcher shows each program's clock hours and externship where the school publishes them.

Which Exam Employers Ask for

The CMA (AAMA) is the only one of the four exams whose standard routes require a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited program. If you're choosing a school and want the most exams open, pick an accredited program of at least 720 hours with a 160-hour externship, which also fits the RMA's education route, and ask whether the school is NCCT-authorized if you want the NCMA. Read the medical assistant certification guide for how the exams compare, or the CMA and CCMA guides for each exam in depth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Medical Assistant Certification Can I Get Without Going to School?

Three of the four bodies state a work-experience route. NHA accepts 1 year of supervised medical assisting work within the last 3 years, or 2 years within the last 5, plus a high school diploma or GED, for the CCMA. NCCT accepts 1 year of full-time medical assistant experience in the past 5 years for the NCMA. AMT accepts 3 years as a medical assistant within the past 7 years for the RMA. The AAMA states no work-experience route for the CMA (AAMA).

Do I Need an Accredited Program for the CMA (AAMA)?

For the AAMA's standard routes, yes: the program must be accredited by CAAHEP or ABHES. Since its eligibility page added an Alternative Pathway, graduates of other postsecondary medical assisting programs can apply if the program meets the AAMA's requirements (at least 560 academic contact hours, an externship of at least 160 hours, a diploma, certificate or associate degree, and an institution accredited by a USDE- or CHEA-recognized accreditor) and the AAMA approves the documents first. 339 programs on this site are on the CAAHEP or ABHES lists.

Can I Take a Certification Exam Before I Graduate?

Some bodies allow it. The AAMA lets students in accredited programs register once all classroom coursework is complete, before the externship ends. AMT's education route accepts applicants scheduled to graduate. NCCT accepts current students at NCCT-authorized schools. NHA's training route asks that you have completed a medical assistant training or education program.

Does Military Training Count?

AMT has a military route for recent graduates of a formal medical services training program of the U.S. Armed Forces, within the last 4 years. NCCT accepts medical assistant training or its equivalent during U.S. military service within the past 5 years, or a service member, veteran or spouse with 1 year of full-time medical assistant experience in that time.

Is This Tool the Final Word on My Eligibility?

No. It applies each body's published routes to your answers, and each body decides your application. Read the quoted route, then confirm the documents it asks for on the body's own page before you pay an exam fee.
