Medical Assistant Certificate and Diploma Programs

Which Medical Assistant Certificate Program Should You Choose?

A medical assistant certificate program trains you for front-desk and exam-room work in a median of 39 weeks, usually with a supervised externship of about 180 hours. Across 1,004 certificate and diploma programs at 916 schools, 284 hold CAAHEP or ABHES accreditation, the standard route to the CMA (AAMA) exam. Choose by length, externship hours, published cost and the certification you want, then compare programs with the program matcher.

What a Medical Assistant Certificate Program Covers

A medical assistant certificate program is the shortest complete route into clinic work. It trains you for both halves of the job: the front desk (scheduling, insurance, medical records) and the exam room (vital signs, injections, specimen collection, assisting the provider).

Most programs land in a narrow band. The median certificate or diploma runs 39 weeks, which is about nine months of full-time study. Schools that count clock hours sit at a median of 800 hours, and credit-hour colleges at 36 credits. Of the 1,004 programs in this set, 750 build in an externship, and the median externship is 180 hours in a working clinic.

The clinical skills are where programs differ most:

  • Phlebotomy appears in 541 programs.
  • EKG appears in 476.
  • Pharmacology appears in 389, and billing and coding in 309.
  • Limited X-ray appears in only 20.

If you want to leave school able to draw blood and run a 12-lead EKG, check the course list on the program profile before you compare price.

Certificate or Diploma: What the Label Actually Tells You

The word on the award says more about the school than about the training. Community colleges usually call their program a certificate. Private career schools and some public technical colleges call theirs a diploma. Of the 1,004 programs here, 614 are certificates and 390 are diplomas, and the two groups share the same median externship of 180 hours.

Compare hours, not titles. Pima Medical Institute-Tucson’s hybrid certificate is 800 clock hours with a 200-hour externship. Milwaukee Area Technical College’s technical diploma is 33 credits with a 3-credit practicum. Southern Regional Technical College’s diploma in Georgia takes one semester of prerequisites plus two of occupational courses. All three train for the same job.

Program facts come from each school's own pages, reviewed October 2026. Cost is the school's published program total, or its published per-credit rate times the stated credits, marked "estimated"; totals often leave out books, fees and exam costs. Length is converted to weeks from the school's wording. Accreditation and "CMA (AAMA) eligible" come only from the CAAHEP and ABHES directories, captured October 12, 2026. Exam badges show the certification exams the program's page names.

Certified Medical Assistant Programs and the CMA Route

People searching for “certified medical assistant programs” usually mean programs that lead to the CMA (AAMA) credential. That depends on accreditation. The AAMA lets you sit the CMA exam if you are a student or graduate of a program accredited by CAAHEP or ABHES. In this set, 284 certificate and diploma programs carry that accreditation: 270 through CAAHEP and 14 through ABHES.

Graduates of other programs have one more door. The AAMA’s Alternative Pathway accepts a program at a recognized institution that equals two semesters, includes at least 560 contact hours plus a 160-hour practicum, and covers phlebotomy and injections. Many short programs miss those minimums.

Accredited certificates are not only expensive ones. Several public colleges price them low:

Program Length or size Accreditation Cost
Carteret Community College certificate (NC) 2 semesters, 14 credits CAAHEP $1,064 estimated
Stanly Community College certificate (NC) 2 semesters, 16 credits CAAHEP $1,216 estimated
Waubonsee Community College certificate (IL) 21 months, 32 credits, with a 2-credit externship CAAHEP $4,672 estimated
Milwaukee Area Technical College diploma (WI) 2 semesters, 33 credits, with a 3-credit practicum CAAHEP $6,042 estimated
Ivy Tech technical certificate (IN) 2-3 semesters, 39 credits CAAHEP $6,957 published
University of Alaska Fairbanks certificate (AK) 36-37 credits, with a 4-credit practicum CAAHEP $9,036 estimated
Agape College of Business and Science certificate (CA) 10 months ABHES $11,705 published

Estimated cost is the published per-credit rate times credits, before fees. Published figures are the school’s own program totals.

Accredited programs also publish outcomes to MAERB, and they vary widely. The University of Alaska Fairbanks reports a five-year job placement average of 88.57% and an exam pass rate of 93.44%. Modesto Junior College reported 2024 exam passage of 62.16%. To test a program you already have in mind, use the accredited program checker.

Which Certification Exam Each Certificate Leads to

Four national exams come up most often in program listings, and each has its own entry rules. Programs often name more than one.

Exam Certifying body Programs here naming it Education route Fee
CMA (AAMA) American Association of Medical Assistants 325 CAAHEP or ABHES program, or the Alternative Pathway $125 members, $250 nonmembers
RMA American Medical Technologists 267 Accredited MA program with 720 hours, including 160 externship hours $150
CCMA National Healthcareer Association 232 Any MA training program finished within 5 years Set by NHA
NCMA National Center for Competency Testing 112 NCCT-authorized program, student or graduate within 5 years $119

Registered vs certified medical assistant: the RMA and the CMA are both national certifications earned by exam; neither is a state license. The RMA also accepts three years of medical assisting work in the past seven, while new CMA candidates need an accredited program or the Alternative Pathway.

Certified clinical medical assistant: the CCMA is the most flexible on schooling. Programs such as Contra Costa Medical Career College and Washington County Career Center name it as the exam their programs prepare you for.

The certification pathway tool matches your training and work history to the exams you can sit now. The full comparison of all four credentials is on the medical assistant certification guide.

The Shortest Certificates and What They Trade Away

Speed costs you training hours, and hours matter for some credentials. Compare four short programs with a standard one:

Program Length Total hours Clinical or externship Cost
Charles A Jones Career and Education Center (CA) 8-10 weeks 160 40-hour externship $2,995 published
Contra Costa Medical Career College (CA) 10 weeks 320 160-hour externship $6,942 published
Washington County Career Center (OH) 16 weeks 170 26 clinical hours $2,128 published
Pike County Career Technology Center (OH) 17 weeks 252 60 clinical hours $2,100 published
Pima Medical Institute-Tucson hybrid (AZ) 35 weeks 800 200-hour externship $18,459 published

The RMA education route asks for 720 hours of instruction with at least 160 externship hours. Washington’s Medical Assistant-Certified credential uses the same 720-hour and 160-hour marks for programs without CAAHEP or ABHES accreditation. A 160-hour or 252-hour program prepares you well for the CCMA, which only asks that you finished a training program, but it will not meet those thresholds.

More fast options, ranked by length, are on the accelerated medical assistant programs page.

What Certificates Cost: Community College Rates vs Career School Totals

Price spreads further than any other number. Public colleges charge by the credit, so a certificate can cost a few hundred to a few thousand dollars in tuition. Private career schools quote all-in program totals that usually run five figures.

At the low end, California residents pay $46 a unit: Mt San Jacinto College’s 13-unit certificate comes to an estimated $598, and Cerro Coso Community College’s 20.5-unit certificate to $943 before about $1,230 in books and supplies. Kiamichi Technology Center-McAlester in Oklahoma charges in-district adults $2.00 per clock hour for a 600-hour program.

At the high end, Miller-Motte College-Raleigh lists $29,920 in total charges for a 15-month diploma, and the College of Westchester charges $904 per credit for a 36-credit certificate. In between, Ross Medical Education Center-Huntsville publishes $16,297 including books and a laptop kit, and UEI College-Phoenix $20,900 with books, supplies and uniforms.

Career school totals usually include books, kits and an exam fee. Community college rates usually do not. Run both through the MA cost calculator, and see the full price breakdown on the medical assistant school cost guide. The most affordable options nationwide are ranked on the affordable programs page.

Two kinds of listing are not full training. Cuesta College’s 12.5-unit Certificate of Specialization is a one-term add-on, and Highline College’s pathway certificate is a bridge for working registered medical assistants. Technical College of the Rockies has closed its program to applications for now.

Evening, Weekend and Hybrid Certificates for Working Adults

If you work days, 257 certificate and diploma programs offer evening classes and 22 offer weekend sessions. Expect the evening version to take longer:

Hybrid formats move lectures online, and 405 programs here use them, but the hands-on work does not move. Pima Medical Institute’s hybrid certificate still requires its 200-hour externship in person. Only 4 certificate or diploma programs in this set are fully online. Externships often run on clinic hours: Herzing University-Birmingham schedules its 160-hour externship over eight weeks of weekday daytime hours, so plan time off for those final weeks. Hybrid choices are compared on the online medical assistant programs page.

What a Certificate Leads To: Jobs, Pay and State Rules

A certificate qualifies you for entry-level medical assistant jobs. In the BLS description, that means scheduling appointments, recording patient histories, taking vital signs, giving injections and collecting samples. The BLS lists a postsecondary nondegree award as the typical entry education for the job, which is exactly what a certificate or diploma is.

The BLS puts median pay at $45,690 a year in 2025 and projects 13% job growth from 2025 to 2035. Certification often decides who gets hired. Most states do not require it by law, but employers may prefer or require it.

A few states write their own rules. Washington issues several medical assistant credentials. The Medical Assistant-Certified credential requires an accredited program or a 720-hour program with a 160-hour externship, plus a passing CMA, RMA, CCMA, NCMA or AMCA exam within five years. If you plan to work there, compare programs on the Washington state page. The work itself and the path upward are covered in the medical assistant careers guide.

How to Choose a Medical Assistant Certificate Program

Use this checklist, in this order:

  • Decide on the credential first. If you want the CMA (AAMA), filter to the 284 CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited programs. If the CCMA is enough for employers near you, the field opens to every program.
  • Check total hours against 720. Below that, the RMA education route and Washington’s 720-hour option are out of reach.
  • Look for 160 or more externship hours. The median is 180. A 26-hour or 40-hour clinical block gives you far less patient contact.
  • Confirm the skills you want. Phlebotomy appears in 541 programs and EKG in 476. If you want both, check the course list.
  • Compare like with like on cost. Put a community college estimate next to a career school’s published total only after you add books, fees and the exam.
  • Read the school’s outcomes. Placement rates in this set vary widely: 43% for 2024 at UEI College-Huntington Park against a five-year 88.57% at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
  • Plan for the degree you might want later. If an associate degree is on your list, pick a college whose certificate credits count toward it. The associate degree page compares those programs.

Who each option suits:

  • If you need to work fast, a 10- to 17-week CCMA-focused certificate gets you hired soonest.
  • If you work days, choose an evening or hybrid program with a set externship window.
  • If you want the CMA, choose an accredited community college certificate, often the least expensive route to it.
  • If you may want a degree later, start with a credit-bearing college certificate rather than a clock-hour diploma.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Medical Assistant Certificate the Same as Being a Certified Medical Assistant?

No. A certificate is the award your school gives you for finishing the program. Certified means you passed a national exam such as the CMA (AAMA), RMA (AMT), CCMA (NHA) or NCMA (NCCT). Most graduates do both: finish the certificate, then sit an exam within months.

Can You Finish a Medical Assistant Certificate in Under Three Months?

A few programs are that short. Charles A Jones Career and Education Center in Sacramento runs an 8-10 week, 160-hour program with a 40-hour externship, and Contra Costa Medical Career College in Antioch runs a 10-week, 320-clock-hour certificate with a 160-hour externship.
