Online Medical Assistant Programs

Can You Really Become a Medical Assistant Online?

Online medical assistant programs put the coursework online, but every one still requires in-person skills training or an externship. Of 508 programs with an online component, 486 are hybrid and only 13 are fully online, and several of those are degree-completion programs for people who already finished MA training. Only 80 of the 508 hold CAAHEP or ABHES accreditation, the standard route to the CMA (AAMA) exam.

What Online Medical Assistant Programs Really Look Like

Online medical assistant programs split the training in two. Lectures on anatomy, terminology, pharmacology, billing and coding move online. Clinical skills such as drawing blood, giving injections and running an EKG are taught in a campus lab and then practiced on real patients in an externship.

Across 417 schools in 45 states, 508 programs put some coursework online. Most are hybrid: 486 combine online classes with scheduled lab days. Only 13 are fully online, and several of those are built for people who already hold an MA diploma. Of the 508, 429 list an externship, with a median of 180 hours.

Credential Online or hybrid programs Fully online
Certificate 194 1
Diploma 220 3
Associate degree 84 9
Non-credit 10 0

The skills mix matches campus programs closely: 312 online or hybrid programs name phlebotomy and 310 name EKG. Hybrid formats change where you study theory, not what you must be able to do on the job.

Can You Get Medical Assistant Certification Online?

You earn certification by passing a national exam, not by finishing a course, and each exam has its own entry rules. The program you choose decides which exams you can sit for.

Among online and hybrid programs, 178 name the RMA (AMT), 159 the CMA (AAMA), 143 the CCMA (NHA) and 61 the NCMA (NCCT). Only 80 are CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited (68 CAAHEP, 12 ABHES), and accreditation is what opens the CMA by the standard route. A program that “prepares you for the CMA” without accreditation leaves you with the AAMA’s Alternative Pathway, which requires a 160-hour practicum in an outpatient setting plus at least 10 injections and 10 blood draws you’ve performed.

The CCMA has the most flexible training rule: NHA accepts any completed MA training program from the last five years. That is why short and virtual-externship programs tend to name the CCMA. Use the certification pathway finder to see which exam your program and background qualify you for, or read the medical assistant certification guide for how the four compare.

The 13 Fully Online Programs, and Who They’re for

Fully online programs exist, but most are not a first step into the field. Several are degree-completion programs that assume you’ve already finished an MA diploma.

Program Length Cost Clinical part
Herzing University-Madison diploma 10 months $12,720 tuition 180-hour externship over 8 weeks, plus two lab courses at healthcare facilities
Bryan University-Springfield diploma 50 weeks $22,680 estimated 160-contact-hour externship in a physician office or clinic
Bryan University clinical certificate About 8 months $18,650 tuition Virtual externship through NHA
Blue Cliff College-Metairie AOS 18 months $35,899 total Externship in a workplace setting
Ross College-Grand Rapids North AAS 70 or 76 weeks $11,207, after the MA diploma 720 clock hours transferred from the diploma
Miller-Motte College-Chattanooga AAS As little as 4 to 6 months $7,840 or $12,520 Completion for Medical Clinical Assistant graduates

Herzing is the clearest example of a true starting program delivered online: coursework at home, then two clinical lab courses completed at healthcare facilities with proctors and a 180-hour weekday daytime externship. Bryan University includes one NHA exam attempt in its $18,650 and names the CCMA. Ross and Miller-Motte sell the second half of a degree to people who finished an MA diploma; their short timelines do not apply to a beginner.

Lowest-Cost Online and Hybrid Programs

Public colleges dominate the affordable end. Estimated costs (published rate times credits or clock hours, before fees) start at $1,368, while the median published total for online and hybrid programs is $18,500.

  • South Piedmont Community College, North Carolina: a 6-month, 18-credit hybrid certificate at an estimated $1,368, and CAAHEP-accredited.
  • Community College of Philadelphia: a 180-hour non-credit certificate with an online asynchronous option at $2,599, or $2,964 in person including the NHA exam fee. The externship is an optional volunteer placement.
  • Dixie Technical College, Utah: an evening hybrid certificate at $3,706 for tuition and course fees, plus a $500 book bundle and $169 CCMA exam, with a 180-hour externship. The school reports a 91% completion rate and 90% placement rate.
  • Salt Lake Community College’s self-paced hybrid: a published $3,794 estimated total program cost that already includes books, scrubs and a $115 national exam.
  • Mayland Community College’s diploma, North Carolina: 51 semester hours, an estimated $3,876, CAAHEP-accredited, with a 100% exam pass rate in 2024.

The affordable medical assistant programs page ranks low-cost options in every format.

Accredited Online and Hybrid Programs

If you want the CMA, start with the 80 accredited options. A few that publish strong numbers:

  • Hawkeye Community College, Iowa: a one-year, 33-credit diploma offered on campus, hybrid or online, estimated at $7,953, with 200+ hours of off-campus work experience. It reports 98% exam passage and 95.08% retention for 2020-2024.
  • Manatee Technical College, Florida: about 6 months and 900 clock hours, a $6,791 estimated total program cost, a 200-hour practicum and 92.73% cumulative job placement for 2020-2024.
  • Grand Rapids Community College, Michigan: 22 weeks, 772 clock hours, $8,744, and 100% of 2024 graduates passed the RMA exam.
  • Palm Beach State College: a 44-credit hybrid or online certificate estimated at $4,444 for Florida residents.
  • Rasmussen University-Florida’s diploma: ABHES-accredited, 51 credits at $339 per credit, an estimated $17,289.

The accredited program checker confirms any program’s status against the accreditors’ directories, and the full list is on the accredited medical assistant programs page.

How Long Online and Hybrid Programs Take

The median online or hybrid program runs 39 weeks, about the same as campus training. The online format saves commuting, not hours.

The shortest options run five to six months. Harrisburg Area Community College’s non-credit CCMA certificate takes about five months full-time by day or about eight months part-time in the evening: 336 classroom and lab hours, then a 160-hour unpaid externship. Boston Career Institute runs 24 weeks of classes, 740 hours including the internship, for $8,500. The National Institute for Medical Assistant Advancement takes 29 weeks and $8,487 for the Fall 2026 cohort, including credentialing exam and study materials, and names all four exams.

The hybrid career-school diplomas in this set mostly take 30 to 43 weeks. Ross Medical Education Center-Huntsville runs 30 weeks by day or 36 weeks in the afternoon and evening for $16,297.

At the long end, hybrid associate degrees take two years. Houston Community College’s AAS runs 60 credits at $84.50 per semester hour for in-district residents, an estimated $5,070. If you want a degree to build on, see the associate degree page, and for the fastest formats, the accelerated programs list.

How the Clinical Part Works

The externship is where an online program becomes a real one, and its logistics matter more than the online format.

  • Distance. Grand Rapids Community College places students at clinical sites within 200 miles of its main campus for a practicum of about 4 to 5 weeks. University of Alaska Southeast lets students request a practicum in their home community.
  • Schedule. Externships run on clinic hours. Fletcher Technical Community College uses weeks 21 and 22 for preceptorships at 40 hours a week, and Lincoln Tech’s 160-hour internship takes about five weeks full time.
  • Length. Hours range widely: ETI Technical College’s hybrid diploma has a 90-hour internship, while the National Institute for Medical Assistant Advancement in Denver builds 240 clinical hours into its 29-week program.

AMT’s RMA education route and the AAMA’s Alternative Pathway both name 160 externship hours, so a shorter or virtual externship narrows your exam choices.

Online Medical Assistant Programs in California and Florida

California has the most online and hybrid programs with 78, and Florida follows with 37.

In California, private career colleges run most hybrid programs. Unitek College in Fremont offers a hybrid diploma with day and evening sections for $20,100 and a 184-hour externship. UEI College’s hybrid diploma costs $20,900 at each campus, but outcomes differ: UEI College-Gardena reports 42% on-time completion and 37% in-field placement for 2024. MiraCosta College in Oceanside is the public alternative, with about $2,000 in estimated program expenses. See all California programs.

In Florida, the accredited public options stand out: Manatee Technical College and Palm Beach State College, above, plus Keiser University-Ft. Lauderdale’s CAAHEP-accredited associate degree offered online, hybrid and on campus. See all Florida programs.

Who Online Study Suits, and How to Choose

Online and hybrid study suits you if you need to keep a job during the classroom phase, live far from campus, or learn better at your own pace. It suits you less if you need structure, or if you can’t take several weeks off for a weekday externship.

  • Check accreditation first if you want the CMA. Only 80 of 508 online or hybrid programs qualify.
  • Ask how many lab days are on campus and where they are.
  • Confirm the externship hours reach 160 if you want the RMA or the Alternative Pathway.
  • Watch for completion degrees. A 4-to-6-month online AAS assumes you already finished an MA diploma.
  • Compare all-in costs. Salt Lake’s estimate includes the exam; Dixie’s does not.

The program matcher filters by format, state and accreditation, and how to become a medical assistant walks through the whole path.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is There a 4-Week Online Medical Assistant Program?

Not among verified programs. The shortest hybrid programs take about 22 weeks, such as Grand Rapids Community College's 772-clock-hour certificate and Fletcher Technical Community College's 22-week non-credit program. AMT's RMA education route asks for 720 hours of instruction, which no 4-week course could cover.

Can You Take the CMA Exam After an Online Program?

Yes, if the program is CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited. The AAMA accepts students and graduates of accredited programs; 80 online or hybrid programs qualify, including Palm Beach State College and Hawkeye Community College. Graduates of unaccredited programs can apply through the AAMA's Alternative Pathway, which requires a 160-hour practicum and documented injections and blood draws.

Does a Hybrid Program Qualify You for the RMA?

It can. AMT's competency and work-based learning route covers hybrid programs that total 720 hours, including at least 160 externship hours, completed within the last four years. Its education route asks for the same 720 hours with 160 externship hours at an accredited program or institution.

Are Online Medical Assistant Programs Less Expensive?

Not usually. Among online and hybrid programs, the median published total is $18,500, above the $16,495 median across all programs. The low-cost options are public hybrid programs, such as South Piedmont Community College at an estimated $1,368 and Community College of Philadelphia's online non-credit certificate at $2,599.

Is an Online Medical Assistant Program Worth It if You Work Full Time?

It can be, as long as you plan for the externship. Online coursework fits around a job, but externships are typically weekday daytime: Herzing University's runs 180 hours over 8 weeks, and Lincoln Tech's 160-hour internship takes about five weeks full time.
