How Much Does Medical Assistant School Cost?
The median medical assistant school cost is $14,650 across 877 programs with a published total or a published rate. Public community and technical colleges come in far lower, with a median of $5,760, while private for-profit career schools have a median of $18,572. Federal aid can cover part of it: the maximum Pell Grant is $7,395 for 2026-27. Run your own numbers in the MA cost calculator.

How Much Does Medical Assistant School Cost?
Across 877 verified programs with either a published total or a published rate, the median medical assistant school cost is $14,650. The full range runs from a few hundred dollars at a California community college to an estimated $59,664 for a private associate degree in New York.
Two kinds of figure sit behind that median, and you should read them differently:
- Published total: the school’s own figure for the whole program. 659 programs publish one, and their median is $16,495. Career schools usually include books, a scrub set, a supply kit and sometimes one certification exam.
- Estimated cost: the school’s published rate times the program’s credits or clock hours, before fees. Community colleges usually publish a rate per credit rather than a total, so their programs fall in this group. Books, uniforms and lab fees come on top.
Who runs the school matters more than anything else. Public colleges have a median of $5,760, and private for-profit schools have a median of $18,572.
Medical Assistant School Cost by School Type and Credential
| Group | Programs priced | Median cost | Median published total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public colleges | 387 | $5,760 | $6,255 |
| Private for-profit schools | 433 | $18,572 | $18,572 |
| Private nonprofit schools | 45 | $16,388 | $15,923 |
| Certificates | 424 | $8,934 | $14,500 |
| Diplomas | 304 | $17,215 | $17,519 |
| Associate degrees | 137 | $12,661 | $28,238 |
| Non-credit programs | 12 | $5,040 | $5,040 |
“Median cost” mixes published totals and rate-based estimates. “Median published total” uses only schools that print a full program price.
Associate degrees show the widest gap. Community college degrees are priced by the credit, which pulls the overall median down to $12,661. The 66 degrees with a published total, mostly at private schools, have a median of $28,238.
The Most Affordable Medical Assistant Programs
Public community and technical colleges dominate the low end. These are estimated costs (published rate times credits or clock hours, before fees):
| Program | State | Rate | Estimated cost | Accredited |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cerro Coso Community College, Clinical MA Certificate | CA | $46 per unit, 20.5 units | $943 | |
| Carteret Community College, MA Certificate | NC | $76 per credit, 14 credits | $1,064 | CAAHEP |
| Victor Valley College, MA Certificate of Achievement | CA | $46 per unit, 24 units | $1,104 | |
| Kiamichi Technology Center-McAlester, Clinical MA | OK | $2.00 per clock hour, 600 hours | $1,200 | |
| Stanly Community College, MA Certificate | NC | $76 per credit, 16 credits | $1,216 | CAAHEP |
| Florida State College at Jacksonville, Medical Assisting | FL | $2.92 per clock hour, 900 hours | $2,628 |
Blank cells mean the program isn’t CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited.
Remember the extras. Cerro Coso lists about $1,230 for books and supplies on top of its $943 in enrollment fees, and nonresidents pay $389 per unit instead of $46. California’s rate applies to state residents only.
Some public programs publish a full total instead, and those totals show what a rate leaves out. Coastal Alabama Community College lists $8,976 in in-state program tuition for its CAAHEP-accredited certificate, and an estimated $10,705 with all costs. Southern Union State Community College lists $10,864 in tuition for 56 credit hours at $194 each, and $13,833.50 once books, supplies, insurance and certification exam fees are added.
Watch for partial programs at the bottom of any price list. The lowest figure in the set, $575 at Cuesta College, belongs to a one-term, 12.5-unit certificate of specialization. Cuesta’s full program is its Certificate of Achievement, estimated at $1,173. The affordable medical assistant programs page ranks every full program by cost.
What Career Schools Charge, and What the Price Includes
Private career schools publish one all-in price, which makes them easy to compare with each other:
| Program | Published total | What it includes | Length |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ross Medical Education Center-Huntsville, MA Diploma | $16,297 | Tuition of $7,575 per semester for two semesters, books $440, supplies $400, technology fee $307, laptop kit | 30 weeks |
| Pima Medical Institute-Tucson, MA Certificate (hybrid) | $18,459 | Tuition, registration, textbooks, uniform, technology fee and tax | 35 weeks |
| Fortis College, MA Diploma | $18,572 | Tuition of $16,686 plus fees, books, student kit, certification exam fee and laptop | 36 instructional weeks |
| Unitek College, MA Diploma | $20,100 | Tuition of $19,000 plus $1,100 books and supplies, for starts after Sept. 1, 2026 | 33 instructional weeks |
| UEI College-Phoenix, MA Diploma | $20,900 | Tuition, books, supplies and uniforms | About 10 months |
| American Career College-Los Angeles, MA Diploma | $22,589 | Tuition $19,475, fees $1,940, books and supplies $1,154, application fee $20 | About 9 months |
These programs are often faster to start and offer evening or hybrid schedules, which is part of what you pay for. They also publish their own outcomes. Fortis College reports a 71% placement rate. UEI College-Huntington Park reports a 55% on-time completion rate and a 43% in-field job placement rate for 2024. Read those numbers next to the price.
Community College or Career School: What the Price Gap Buys
The price gap is real, and so are the differences in what you get:
| Feature | Public colleges | Private for-profit schools |
|---|---|---|
| Programs verified | 732 | 517 |
| CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited | 293 | 25 |
| Evening schedule offered | 62 | 220 |
| Online or hybrid coursework | 126 | 344 |
| Median length | 44 weeks | 39 weeks |
| Median cost | $5,760 | $18,572 |
Public colleges hold most of the accredited programs, which matters if you want the CMA (AAMA) by the standard route. Career schools offer far more evening and online options and run a little shorter. If you work days and need an evening program, the higher price may be the cost of keeping your income. If you can attend weekday classes, a public program usually gives you accreditation for a fraction of the price.

| Associate degree programs | 137 | $2,645 | $12,661 | $59,664 |
| Non-credit training programs | 12 | $2,012 | $5,040 | $10,800 |
| Public colleges | 387 | $598 | $5,760 | $20,636 |
| Private for-profit schools | 432 | $3,500 | $18,572 | $59,664 |

| Every program | 877 | $598 | $14,650 | $59,664 |
Cost is the school's published program total (659 programs) or its published per-credit rate times the stated credits, labelled estimated (218 programs). Public colleges' figures are usually the in-district or in-state rate. Rates read October 2026; totals may leave out books, uniforms and exam fees.
The Most Expensive Programs Are Associate Degrees
The highest estimates all come from private associate degrees priced by the credit:
- South University-Savannah: $475 per quarter credit for 92 quarter credits, an estimated $43,700 before textbooks and technology fees. It is CAAHEP-accredited and reports a 92% credentialing exam pass rate for 2020 to 2024.
- Florida National University: $700 per credit for 75 credits, an estimated $52,500.
- The College of Westchester: $904 per credit for 66 credits, an estimated $59,664.
Compare that with a public degree. Central Arizona College charges $90 per credit in-state for its 60-credit, CAAHEP-accredited AAS, an estimated $5,400. Both degrees lead to the same CMA exam.
Online Program Costs
Online coursework doesn’t make a program less expensive. Most online and hybrid programs are run by private schools:
- Herzing University-Madison’s online diploma: $12,720 total tuition, $530 per credit for 24 credits, with a 180-hour in-person externship.
- Orion Technical College’s online diploma: $15,940 including a $900 technology fee.
- Bryan University’s online certificate: $18,650, including books, courseware, a medical kit and one NHA exam attempt.
The online medical assistant programs page compares every online and hybrid option side by side.
Costs Beyond Tuition
Budget for these even when a program lists a total:
- Certification exam. The CMA (AAMA) exam is $125 for AAMA members or $250 for nonmembers. The RMA from AMT is $150, covering the application, exam and first annual fee. The NCMA from NCCT is $119. Some totals already include one attempt, as Fortis College’s and Contra Costa Medical Career College’s do.
- Books and supplies. These are often separate at community colleges, as Cerro Coso’s $1,230 shows.
- Technology fees. Ross lists $307, and Orion lists $900.
- Health requirements, tools, uniforms and kits. George C Wallace Community College-Dothan projects $17,783 for its five-semester AAS: tuition for 73 credit hours at $131, plus fees, health requirements, NHA testing, tools, uniforms, kits and books.
- Lost wages during the externship. The median externship is 180 hours, usually unpaid and full time on weekdays. Fortis describes its 180-hour externship as unpaid.
How to Pay for Medical Assistant School
Pell Grants. The maximum Pell Grant is $7,395 for 2026-27, and a Pell Grant generally doesn’t have to be repaid. At a public college charging $76 per credit, that can cover a whole certificate. You apply with the FAFSA.
Workforce Pell. Starting July 1, 2026, Pell can also pay for approved short workforce programs. These run 8 to 14 weeks of instruction and 150 to 599 clock hours. The award is prorated, and students in these programs can’t get other federal aid such as loans. A school has to apply for approval, so confirm the program is approved before counting on it.
Federal loans. Dependent undergraduates can borrow up to $5,500 in the first year, and independent students up to $9,500. You must be enrolled at least half-time in a program that leads to a degree or certificate.
Local and employer funding. Holyoke Community College’s Jump Start program costs participants nothing. Ivy Tech’s technical certificate, with $6,957 in estimated program tuition, may be free through Indiana’s Next Level Jobs for eligible students. Many health systems also pay for training in exchange for a work commitment, so ask the employers near you.
How to Keep the Cost Down
- Price the full program, not the per-credit rate. Multiply credits by the rate, then add books, kit and fees.
- Start at a public college. Its median is $5,760, against $18,572 at for-profit schools.
- Check accreditation before you compare prices. Among the lowest-cost programs above, Carteret and Stanly are CAAHEP-accredited, which keeps the CMA open to you. Filter with the accredited program checker.
- Ask what the total includes. Exam fees, laptops and uniforms can be included or extra.
- Read the outcomes beside the price. A program with a 43% in-field placement rate costs more per employed graduate than its sticker shows.
- Match the cost to the pay. The BLS median for medical assistants was $45,690 in May 2025. The medical assistant careers guide covers pay by state.
Program length drives cost too. See how long medical assistant school takes, use the MA cost calculator to compare two programs, or browse by state, starting with California, North Carolina and Florida.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Much Does the Medical Assistant Certification Exam Cost?
The CMA (AAMA) exam is $125 for AAMA members and $250 for nonmembers. The RMA from AMT is $150, which covers the application, the exam and the first annual fee. The NCMA from NCCT is $119. Some programs, such as Fortis College and Contra Costa Medical Career College, include one exam fee in their published total.
Are There Medical Assistant Programs That Cost Nothing?
A few. Holyoke Community College in Massachusetts describes its 16-week Jump Start Medical Assistant program as one of its grant-funded free job training programs. Ivy Tech Community College says its technical certificate may be free through Next Level Jobs for eligible Indiana students.
Is Online Medical Assistant School Less Expensive?
Not usually. Online and hybrid programs are mostly run by private schools, so their totals look like career-school prices: Herzing University-Madison's online diploma is $12,720 in tuition, Orion Technical College's is $15,940, and Bryan University's online certificate is $18,650. A California community college certificate at $46 per unit costs far less, with in-person labs.
Can You Use FAFSA for Medical Assistant School?
Yes, at schools that take part in federal student aid. The FAFSA is the application for Pell Grants and federal student loans. Federal loans require at least half-time enrollment in a program that leads to a degree or certificate.
Does Medical Assistant Pay Justify the Cost?
The BLS median pay for medical assistants was $45,690 in May 2025, with the middle half earning $38,470 to $49,180. A public program at a few thousand dollars is easy to pay back on that wage. A private associate degree estimated at $43,700, like South University's, is a much heavier load for the same job.
