How the Cost and Payoff Calculator Works

Pick a program and the calculator loads the school's published program total, or its published per-credit or per-clock-hour rate and the credits or hours the program states (879 programs publish one or the other). Rate times credits or hours is labeled an estimate. Add fees, books, scrubs and exam fees, then your grants and savings. The rest is borrowed in federal Direct Loans, up to the first-year limit for your status, and anything above that limit shows as still to cover.

The monthly payment spreads the loan, plus its 1.057% fee, over 10 years at the 6.52% fixed undergraduate rate, with a $50 minimum. Payback divides your net cost by a month of pay at the BLS median for medical assistants ($45,690 nationally, May 2025) or your state's median. If you enter your current pay, it divides by the monthly raise instead.

Federal Aid for Medical Assistant School

  • Pell Grants. Up to $7,395 for the 2026–27 award year, and they don't have to be repaid. The amount depends on your Student Aid Index, the program's cost of attendance and your enrollment. Apply with the FAFSA form.
  • Workforce Pell. From July 1, 2026, short programs of 8 to 14 weeks and 150 to 599 clock hours can qualify once the Department of Education approves them. Awards are reduced because the programs run shorter than an academic year, and students in them can't get other federal aid.
  • Direct Loans. Up to $5,500 in the first year for dependent students and $9,500 for independent students, if you're enrolled at least half time in a program that leads to a certificate or degree. Repayment starts after a six-month grace period.

Ways to Lower What MA School Costs You

  • Compare community colleges. Public colleges usually charge in-district students less. The most affordable programs list ranks published and estimated costs.
  • Ask about employer training. Some clinics and health systems pay for training or hire and train medical assistants; enter that support as other aid.
  • Check what the price includes. Some schools fold books, scrubs and the exam fee into the total and others bill them separately, so compare like with like.
